The Blocks is an interactive sculpture built using seven 8 inch 3D printed blocks that spell out “CHICAGO”. Each block is a letter and within that letter holds a world. Each built uniquely from personal inspiration, experience, and time spent in the city of Chicago.
The original concept of this project was always supposed to be a tower that graphically spells out CHICAGO. What changed throughout the process was how these blocks would be interacted with and also be portrayed.
The first idea was to fill the boxes with the cultures that make the city what it is but I came to realize that I would not be able to include every culture and I had to quickly change my idea. I had the blocks printed but I didn’t have anything to fill them with.
I decided to use my own personal experiences and the time I had spent in the city of Chicago as inspiration for the insides and made each block as unique as possible, even creating a 3D printed book to match along the way.
MODELING
Fusion360 was used to create all parts of the physical blocks. Each block consisted of 3 parts, the block itself, the door, and the outer rim. Each block was designed with feet and divots at the top to ensure a nice fit while stacked.
Antenna was built with bored out holes at the bottom of each antenna to hold weights for stablization.
Adobe Illustrator was used to create SVGs of each letter and then extruded/modeled in Fusion360.
